Me and Rich both needed new cameras so decided to negotiate a bulk purchase discount at one of Bangkok's seventy two thousand electrical retail establishments. I know this number is accurate because we visited each and every one of them today.
Our problems were twofold. Firstly, the Thais don't really do deals - or at least not if there's the slightest chance they'll end up 20p out of pocket they don't. And secondly, neither me, Rich or even Wend has a shopping boredom threshold of more than 5 minutes. Focus was quickly lost throughout the day and we spent most of the time eating, drinking, chatting or doing anything other than sizing up cameras.
Got there in the end though, and felt quite pleased with ourselves after saving three and a half quid each.
Managed to blow this windfall in about 12 seconds in the evening as we treated ourselves to a cocktail at one of Bangkok's swankiest joints. The Vertigo bar, which sits on an open-air terrace 60 floors up, provided unforgettable and unbeatable views of the city. Quite pricey mind, but they did keep our little bowl of cashew nuts topped up and Rich was very taken with the bloke dishing out handtowels in the bogs.
Sadly, we won't see him again for a while as he's off to give the good folk of Melbourne the pleasure of his company for the next 12 months (I'm talking about Rich, not the towel bloke). But we had a right old laugh today, and it was a heady end to our time in Southeast Asia.
